Chapter 8 - The Desperate Confession

The revelation that my brother was a murder suspect sent a violent chill down my spine.

Mr. Henderson assured me that the company was fully protecting me and that Derek would be handed straight over to law enforcement.

I thanked my boss and retreated to my office, locking the door to process the sheer magnitude of the situation.

My desk phone rang an hour later, displaying my mother's cell phone number on the caller ID.

I pressed the record button on my secure digital dictaphone and answered the call on speaker.

My mother was absolutely hysterical, crying so hard she could barely form a coherent sentence.

She screamed that the bank was threatening immediate foreclosure because the second mortgage had been flagged for severe fraud.

She begged me to call my lawyers, withdraw the lien, and come back to fix the horrible mess I had created.

I kept my voice icy and completely devoid of any emotion.

I told her I would never act as a human shield for her or her murderous golden child ever again.

My refusal caused her to completely snap, abandoning her tears for pure, venomous rage.

She screamed that I was a selfish, ungrateful child who owed them everything for raising me.

In her blind fury, she completely lost control of her words and the fragile lies she had built.

She yelled that she and Derek had planned to drain my credit for months before kicking me out so I would be too poor to fight them in court.

She explicitly admitted to forging my signature on the loan documents, claiming she had the right to do it as my mother.

I smiled a cold, victorious smile as the digital recorder captured every single word of her unhinged confession.

I calmly interrupted her screaming rant with a soft, quiet voice.

I thanked her for her honesty and informed her that the police would be receiving this audio file in exactly ten minutes.

The line went dead with a sharp click, leaving only the sound of absolute silence.

I emailed the audio file to Sophie, who immediately forwarded it to the local district attorney.

Later that evening, I watched the local news from the safety of my new living room couch.
