Chapter 5 - The Master Stroke

I stood on the porch staring at the woman who used to share all my deepest secrets.
Sarah had betrayed our decade-long friendship to align herself with my toxic, manipulative brother.
I didn't scream, I didn't cry, and I certainly didn't demand an explanation from her.
I simply smiled a chilling, empty smile that caused Sarah to physically step back in fear.
I walked down the driveway, got into my car, and locked the doors without looking back at the house.
As I pulled out into the street, I could see Derek in the rearview mirror, proudly directing his kids into what used to be my home.
He was already gloating about taking the master bedroom and finally being the king of the castle.
He had absolutely no idea that his castle was built entirely on a foundation of gasoline.
I drove toward my new apartment, feeling a massive, suffocating weight lift off my shoulders with every passing mile.
I pulled into my secure parking garage, turned off the engine, and picked up my cell phone.
It was time to stop playing defense and execute the trap I had carefully laid over the past three days.
I scrolled through my contacts and called the primary billing department of the local HVAC company.
The customer service representative answered cheerfully and asked how she could help me today.
I verified my identity using my social security number and the primary account password.
I calmly instructed her to immediately cancel the payment contract on the expensive furnace I had installed in my parents' house.
The representative warned me that canceling the contract would result in an immediate repossession of the equipment.
I told her I was fully aware of the consequences and authorized the repossession order.
She processed the request and confirmed that the retrieval crew was in the area and would arrive at the property within two hours.
I ended the call and felt a dark, satisfying wave of justice wash over me.
The winter temperatures were scheduled to drop below freezing by nightfall.
Derek and my mother were about to spend their first celebratory night shivering in a freezing, empty house.
I walked into my warm, quiet apartment and poured myself a tall glass of expensive wine.
I took a long sip, enjoying the absolute silence of my new, peaceful life.
Suddenly, my phone vibrated on the kitchen counter, displaying an incoming call from my father.
I answered the call, expecting him to be screaming about the missing furnace.

Instead, my father was weeping uncontrollably into the receiver.
He choked out a terrifying apology, sobbing that he had just found a loaded gun hidden under Derek's mattress.
