Chapter 7 - The Hostage

Panic instantly erupted across the sunny bank courtyard as innocent bystanders screamed and scattered in every direction.
The undercover police officers raised their weapons and ordered my brother-in-law to drop his gun immediately.
He ignored their commands and grabbed my arm violently to pull me in front of him as a human shield.
I struggled fiercely against his grip but he pressed the cold steel barrel of the handgun directly against my spine.
He yelled at the police that he would shoot me dead if they did not drop their weapons and back away.
The officers slowly lowered their guns to avoid escalating the deadly situation in a public space.
He dragged me backward toward the heavy glass doors of the bank lobby to secure a better defensive position.
Just as we reached the entrance a small and fragile figure stepped out from behind a marble pillar.
It was my mother who had managed to slip away from the police cruiser parked around the block.
She stood directly in his path with her purse clutched tightly in her trembling hands.
He laughed cruelly and told the crazy old woman to get out of his way before he shot her too.
Something miraculous and terrifying shifted in my mother's eyes in that exact moment.
The dense fog of confusion completely vanished and was replaced by a fierce and maternal clarity.
She looked at the man holding a gun to her daughter and remembered exactly what he had done to her grandson.
She did not scream or hesitate or show an ounce of fear.
She swung her heavy leather purse with the brutal force of a protective mother and struck him squarely in the face.
The heavy brass buckle of the bag shattered his nose and sent him stumbling backward in agony.
His grip on my arm loosened just enough for me to tear myself away and dive to the concrete ground.
The police officers charged forward and tackled him violently before he could regain his balance or raise his weapon.
They pinned him to the floor and secured heavy steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.
I scrambled to my feet and threw my arms around my mother while crying tears of absolute gratitude.
The lead detective walked over to us and holstered his weapon with a grim expression on his face.
He thanked my mother for her bravery but delivered a devastating piece of legal news.

He informed me that the corrupt notary had already filed the forged property deed with the county clerk an hour ago.
The private equity firm that bought the house from my brother-in-law was already changing the locks on my front door.
