Chapter 6 - The Desperate Trap

The horrifying realization hit me with the force of a speeding freight train in the dark.

My mother had not accidentally confused her own heart pills with the chili powder in the kitchen.

My brother-in-law had secretly planted his own lethal medication in her purse to frame her for the poisoning.

He knew her declining mental state would make her the perfect scapegoat for the murder of my son.

If my son died the massive family trust fund would automatically default directly back to him.

I drove straight to the police precinct and slammed the stolen pill bottle down on the detective's desk.

I explained the entire twisted plot and demanded they arrest him for attempted murder and real estate fraud.

The detective looked at the bottle carefully but sighed with deep legal frustration.

He explained that finding his pills in her pocket did not prove he was the one who actually crushed them.

We needed a recorded confession or concrete physical evidence tying him directly to the poisoning of my child.

I called my husband at the hospital and told him we needed to set a dangerous trap for his brother.

My husband agreed instantly and promised to do whatever it took to protect our family from that monster.

We devised a plan to lure him to a public place using the remaining balance of the family trust fund.

I sent my brother-in-law a text message claiming I was willing to buy my house back from him in cash.

I told him I would meet him at the downtown bank courtyard at noon with a cashier's check for two hundred thousand dollars.

He replied almost immediately and greedily agreed to the terms of the meeting.

The police wired me with a hidden microphone and positioned undercover officers throughout the sunny bank courtyard.

I stood by the large stone fountain nervously clutching a fake envelope filled with blank paper.

He finally strutted into the courtyard wearing a smug smile and an expensive new suit bought with our stolen savings.

I demanded he explain exactly how he tricked my mother into poisoning my baby before I handed over the money.

He laughed arrogantly and leaned in close to my face to whisper his terrible confession.

He admitted he had convinced her the crushed pills were actually sweet vitamins meant to make the baby strong.

The hidden police officers immediately broke their cover and drew their weapons while running toward us.

He realized it was a trap and his smug smile morphed into a mask of pure violent rage.

He reached into his tailored jacket and pulled out a heavy black handgun in the middle of the crowded courtyard.
