Chapter 4 - The Mother-in-Law’s Hubris

While David was sitting in a holding cell at the local precinct, Barbara decided to take matters into her own hands. She had always believed that a stern voice and a white, middle-class sense of entitlement could bend the world to her will. She found her emergency prepaid cell phone and dialed the Navy base's public directory, navigating the endless menus until she reached the Base Commander’s office.

"This is Barbara," she announced, her voice dripping with artificial concern. "I am the mother-in-law of your new Captain. I need to speak to an Admiral immediately. My daughter-in-law is having a severe psychotic break. She shaved her own head last night and has stolen my son's money. She is a danger to national security."

The aide on the other end of the line was dead silent for a moment. "Ma'am, please hold."

What Barbara didn't know was that my attorney had already forwarded the evidence of the forged life insurance policies and the fraudulent psychiatric documents to the Judge Advocate General (JAG) and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). When Barbara made that call, she wasn't manipulating a bureaucracy; she was providing a recorded confession of their conspiracy.

Instead of an Admiral, the call was routed to Special Agent Vance of NCIS.

"Mrs. Barbara, this is Agent Vance. We take allegations regarding our senior officers' mental health very seriously. Can you tell me more about this incident?"

Barbara, thrilled that someone was finally listening, spilled her rehearsed lies. She claimed I was erratic, that I had been threatening them, and that I desperately needed to be committed to a civilian psychiatric ward. She laid out the exact narrative they had planned to use to cash in the five-million-dollar policy.

"Thank you, ma'am," Agent Vance said smoothly. "We will be dispatching personnel to your location shortly to ensure your safety."

Barbara hung up, a wicked smile spreading across her face. She thought she had won. She thought the military was coming to arrest me. She decided to pour herself a glass of warm tap water and wait for the cavalry.
