Chapter 10 - The Conquered Battlefield

Three months later.

The ocean breeze off the coast of the naval base whipped around me, carrying the sharp scent of salt and aviation fuel. I stood on the deck of an aircraft carrier, the steel leviathan vibrating beneath my polished boots.

My hair had begun to grow back, forming a tight, auburn military buzzcut. I hadn't hidden it beneath a wig. I wore it proudly, a badge of survival, a testament to the night I was forged in the fire of absolute betrayal and came out unbreakable.

The task force under my command had just successfully intercepted a major human trafficking ring utilizing the very shipping lanes I had been assigned to monitor. The operation was flawless, executed with the precision of a team that implicitly trusted their commander.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. A message from Mark, my attorney.

“Divorce decree is finalized and stamped. David’s sentencing hearing concluded an hour ago. He got thirty years. Barbara got twelve. It’s over, Captain.”

I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the crisp sea air. The heavy weight that had sat on my chest for years—the constant belittling, the financial drain, the psychological warfare in my own home—was gone.

A young Ensign approached, snapping a crisp salute. "Captain, the Admiral is ready for the operational debrief in the war room."

I returned the salute, my movements sharp and practiced. "Thank you, Ensign. I'm on my way."

I walked across the flight deck, the sun warming my face. They had told me to learn my place as a proper woman. They had told me to learn to obey.

I smiled, stepping into the shadows of the command center. I had learned exactly where my place was. My place was at the head of the table. My place was leading warriors in the dark.

I was the commander of the battlefield. And I had never felt more alive.
