Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The verdict was swift. It took the judge less than twenty minutes in his chambers to make a ruling.

When he returned, the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

"In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case so propelled by sheer malice and greed," the judge stated, looking at Evelyn with pure disgust. "The claims against the estate of Arthur Vance are entirely without merit. The adoption is legally binding. The will is ironclad. I rule in favor of the defendant, Leo Vance."

He paused, looking down at his notes. "Furthermore, I am forwarding the transcripts of this trial to the District Attorney's office. Mrs. Vance, I highly suggest you find criminal representation. We are adjourned."

Evelyn collapsed into her chair, sobbing hysterically. Marcus was nowhere to be seen; he had probably bolted the moment Gable took the stand. I watched her for a moment. I felt no anger anymore. I felt no sadness. I just felt nothing. She was a stranger.

I buttoned my suit jacket, shook Helen's hand, and walked out of the courtroom. The heavy wooden doors closed behind me, shutting out Evelyn's cries, shutting out the past forever.
