Chapter 6 - The Secret Witness

To put the final nail in the coffin, Helen pulled a wild card. During our research, we found a name in Arthur’s ledger: Thomas Gable. He was a notary public who had witnessed the adoption papers and Arthur's will. Sterling had been trying to claim the signature was forged.

We found Gable living in an assisted living facility two towns over. When we visited him, the old man’s memory was sharp as a tack.

"Arthur Vance?" Gable chuckled, adjusting his glasses. "Toughest man I ever met. Loved that boy more than his own life. I remember the day he signed those papers. He told me, 'Tom, this is the most important document I'll ever sign.' He was perfectly sane. Sharp as a whip."

But Gable gave us something better.

"You know," Gable added, leaning forward. "A lady came to my office about a week after Arthur passed. Blonde hair. Expensive suit. Offered me ten thousand dollars in cash to 'lose' my copy of the notary log."

Helen and I locked eyes. Witness tampering. Evelyn wasn't just greedy; she was committing felonies to steal my inheritance.
