Chapter 6 - The Desperate Breath

The shrill, unrelenting alarm of the failing heart monitor sliced violently through the quiet ICU like a jagged, rusty knife.

Clara frantically ripped open the incubator hatch, gently pulling the tiny, entirely unresponsive baby into her warm arms.

"The main oxygen lines are completely dead, and the manual backup tanks are locked inside the main supply closet way down the hall," Clara shouted over the alarm.

David didn't waste a single, precious second asking unnecessary questions or debating the immense risk.

He sprinted out of the ICU doors, his heavy boots slipping slightly on the highly polished linoleum floor as he aggressively rounded the corner.

The medical supply closet was fifty feet away, but standing directly in front of the locked door were two of Richard's heavily armed mercenaries.

They immediately raised their automatic weapons the absolute second they saw David charging fearlessly down the hallway toward them.

David dove desperately behind a heavy metal medicine cart just as a deafening hail of bullets completely shattered the glass windows behind his head.

Back inside the secure ICU, Elena was gently rubbing the dying baby's chest, hot tears streaming endlessly down her pale, exhausted face.

Little Lily stood bravely beside her weeping mother, gently holding the other twin's tiny hand through the small incubator access hole.

"Breathe, my sweet angel, please just take a breath," Elena whispered brokenly, pressing her warm forehead against her dying child's freezing face.

Out in the chaotic hallway, David knew with absolute certainty that he couldn't possibly win a massive shootout with zero weapons.

He suddenly noticed a large, pressurized tank of liquid nitrogen resting dangerously near the wall just a few feet from the firing mercenaries.

David grabbed a razor-sharp surgical scalpel from the top of his cart and threw it with desperate precision straight at the high-pressure valve of the tank.

The flying blade perfectly sliced the fragile release mechanism, instantly sending a massive, freezing cloud of blinding white vapor blasting directly into the hallway.

The armed mercenaries screamed in absolute agony as the sub-zero chemical gas blinded them and instantly froze their exposed facial skin.

David expertly used the chaotic distraction to tackle them both to the floor, aggressively snatching the master keycard from one of their tactical belts.

He quickly unlocked the heavy supply closet door, snatched a portable green oxygen cylinder, and ran like a madman back toward the ICU.

He tossed the heavy green tank forcefully to Clara, who quickly and expertly hooked it up to the dying baby's tiny, specialized facial mask.

For ten agonizing, heart-stopping seconds, the room was entirely silent except for the reassuring hiss of the flowing life-saving oxygen.

Then, the tiny baby finally let out a sharp, healthy, beautiful cry, and the digital monitor's flat line jumped triumphantly back into a steady rhythm.

Elena collapsed weakly against the concrete wall, weeping openly with profound, overwhelming relief as she watched her child breathe again.

But their hard-fought victory was abruptly interrupted by a dark, sinister chuckle coming directly from the open doorway.

Richard Vance casually stood there holding a heavy gold-plated pistol, and he had the cold barrel pressed directly against the sweating temple of the hospital's chief of police.

Richard smiled like a hungry predator and stated that he was deeply tired of playing these childish games, demanding they hand over the children immediately.
