Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

The bright, beautiful morning sun shone perfectly through the large bay windows of the incredibly spacious suburban house.

It had been exactly six peaceful months since Richard Vance was officially sentenced to consecutive life sentences in federal prison without the possibility of parole.

Elena stood happily in her beautiful new kitchen, pouring a steaming cup of fresh coffee while humming a highly cheerful, uplifting tune.

Thanks to the massive federal reward money and a historic lawsuit settlement from the hospital's corrupt administration, her family would never have to worry about money again.

She looked happily out the window and smiled widely, watching little Lily playfully push a brand-new, bright pink toy wheelbarrow across the freshly cut green grass.

David, who had wonderfully and officially become a permanent part of their beautiful makeshift family, was happily chasing Lily around the yard, playfully pretending to be a friendly monster.

Nurse Clara sat comfortably at the large kitchen island, lovingly feeding the absolutely healthy, adorably chubby twins their warm morning oatmeal.

The state courts had officially and permanently granted Elena full legal custody of the beautiful babies, completely ending the dark, twisted legacy of the Vance family forever.

The horrific, violent memories of that terrifying rainy night finally felt like a distant, faded nightmare, completely replaced by profound warmth, absolute safety, and endless laughter.

Elena took a deeply satisfying sip of her hot coffee, feeling an overwhelming, beautiful sense of absolute peace settle permanently over her soul.

She walked casually to the heavy oak front door to quickly grab the morning mail, humming happily as she mindlessly flipped through the standard stack of envelopes.

Nestled quietly between a boring utility bill and a colorful magazine was a highly unusual, incredibly thick black envelope with absolutely no return address.

Elena frowned in slight confusion, carefully setting her coffee mug down on the hallway table to slide her shaking finger under the dark red wax seal.

She pulled out a single, highly glossy photograph of little Lily pushing the rusted, squeaky wheelbarrow down the dirt road from exactly six months ago.

On the back of the terrifying photograph, written in perfectly elegant, blood-red ink, was a single chilling sentence.

"My arrogant brother was a careless fool, but I assure you, Elena, I will not make the same mistakes when I finally come to collect my rightful blood."
