Chapter 4 - The Hostage

Preston laughed dryly and casually tossed the office key into his pocket.
He told me he knew I would be desperate enough to come looking for evidence.
I demanded that he clear my name and confess to the financial crimes.
He stepped closer and whispered that nobody would ever believe a bitter, dumped bride over his wealthy family.
He pulled a small digital remote from his jacket and pressed a red button.
A heavy metal security shutter slammed down over the only window in the office.
He informed me that the room was completely soundproof and secure.
I tried to push past him, but he shoved me hard against the wooden bookshelf.
He demanded that I log into the accounting firm's server and delete the original audit files.
He said he would keep me locked in this room until I destroyed the evidence against his family.
I frantically scanned the dark room for any possible weapon or escape route.
My eyes landed on the heavy bronze bookend resting on the edge of the shelf.
I grabbed the heavy statue and swung it directly at the fire alarm pull station on the wall.
The glass shattered loudly, and the building's massive emergency sirens began to wail.
Preston cursed loudly and covered his ears against the deafening noise.
I shoved him out of the way, unlocked the door, and sprinted down the hallway.
I burst out of the apartment building just as two police cruisers pulled up to the curb.

The officers did not go inside to investigate the fire alarm.
They walked directly toward me and told me I was under arrest for corporate espionage.
