Chapter 6 - The Resurrection

The silence in the grand ballroom was deafening.

It started with a few frantic whispers from the people who recognized me from the news reports.

The whispers quickly grew into a chaotic, buzzing wave of utter confusion.

I walked slowly down the center aisle, pushing June's stroller with deliberate, measured steps.

The crowd parted for me like I was a holy apparition.

I kept my eyes locked entirely on Brett's pale, terrified face.

He looked like the devil himself had just walked in to collect a debt.

I did not shout to make a scene.

I did not shed a single tear of victimhood.

I stopped right at the edge of the stage, looking up at the man who promised to love me forever.

I leaned closer to the microphone stand and let my voice carry through the room.

I told him that he didn't lose me in that fire.

I told everyone in the room that he had purposely left me there to die.

The ballroom erupted into gasps and furious murmurs.

Tessa, standing slightly behind Brett on the stage, looked like she was going to vomit.

I expected Brett to panic, to apologize, or to run away from the crowd.

Instead, a terrifyingly calm expression washed over his face.

He gripped the microphone tightly and let out a tragic, broken sob that echoed through the speakers.

He told the crowd to please forgive his deeply mentally ill wife.

He claimed my trauma from the fire had completely fractured my mind.

He pointed a shaking finger at me and yelled for hotel security to intervene immediately.

He ordered them to secure his innocent baby before my psychosis caused me to hurt her.

Four massive men in black suits began rushing down the aisles toward me.
