Chapter 5 - The Investigation

Dad didn't go back to sleep. He spent the rest of the night on the phone. By morning, he told me, "It wasn't Mark. Mark is still in a holding cell, throwing a tantrum. This was a private investigator he hired before the arrest. A clean-up crew."

I felt a surge of rage that pushed past the fear. "He’s still trying to control me from behind bars?"

"He's trying to find leverage," Dad said. "He thinks if he can find a secret, he can force a plea deal. He doesn't realize he's playing a game of chess with a man who has already seen the end of the board."

I watched my father move through the house. He was methodical. He checked the perimeter, installed reinforced locks, and had me change my phone number. For the first time, I saw him not as my aging, retired father, but as the man who had led missions into the unknown.

"I need to know what he's looking for," I said.

Dad looked at me, a flicker of pride in his eyes. "He’s looking for the one thing you kept hidden. The file you took from his safe the night you left."
