Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Consequences

Mark froze, his bravado instantly evaporating as he realized the two officers weren't just security—they were State Troopers. The blue and red lights of their cruisers bled through the living room curtains, illuminating the fear that had finally replaced the rage in his eyes.

"You’re trespassing, Reed!" Mark barked, though his voice cracked. He tried to puff out his chest, but he looked small against the towering frame of my father.

Dad didn’t look at Mark. He didn’t even acknowledge the pathetic excuse for a man standing in his way. His eyes were locked on me, scanning for damage. He saw the red, weeping welt on my neck where Mark’s fingers had been. The air in the room grew heavy, like the seconds before a lightning strike.

"Officer," Dad said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion, "that man assaulted my daughter. I have the digital trail, and she is filing a statement."

Mark lunged, a desperate, irrational move. "She’s my wife! This is a domestic dispute!"

He didn't make it two steps. The Troopers were on him before I could even blink. One of them, a man who clearly had years of experience, pinned Mark against the wall with clinical efficiency. The metal of the handcuffs clicked—the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

"Mark, shut up," one of the officers warned, his voice low and dangerous. "You’re done talking."

As they hauled him out, he screamed at me. He called me every name in the book, promising that he’d be back, that I was nothing without him. I watched the door close behind them, the house suddenly feeling larger, cleaner, and quiet.

Dad walked over, his movements stiff from the old injuries he never complained about. He didn't hug me—he knew better. He stood beside me, watching the flashing lights fade down the driveway.

"You’re safe now," he said. It wasn't a question. It was a promise.
