Chapter 8 - The Raid

The intense white light blinded both of us as a loud megaphone echoed from the front lawn.

Federal agents had surrounded the property, demanding that Evan drop the weapon and step outside with his hands up.

Evan panicked, spinning around wildly and firing a single shot blindly into the darkness.

The glass window shattered into thousands of jagged pieces, raining down across the expensive marble floor.

I dove behind the kitchen island, covering my head as the deafening sound of the gunshot rang in my ears.

Evan dropped the gun and fell to his knees, screaming that he surrendered.

Heavier footsteps pounded through the front door as armed agents swarmed the house in tactical gear.

They pinned Evan to the ground, securing his wrists in heavy steel handcuffs while reading him his rights.

A woman in a sharp suit walked into the kitchen, flashing an FBI badge at me.

She helped me off the floor and explained that Dana had been cooperating with federal authorities for months.

Dana had intentionally lured me to her office so the FBI could safely secure the encrypted flash drive Brooke had provided.

The fake evidence Evan planted against me was easily dismantled by the Bureau's cyber division.

They had used the freezing of my funds as bait to force Evan out of hiding and into making a desperate move.

I watched as they dragged my sobbing, humiliated husband out of the house in front of all our wealthy former neighbors.

The FBI agent told me that I was completely cleared of all charges and that my escrow account would be unfrozen in the morning.

I finally felt a massive wave of relief wash over my tired body.

As I walked out of the house, my phone chimed with a message from an unknown number.

It was an audio file of Diane Mercer ordering a hitman to silence me permanently.
