Chapter 4 - The Hunted

Brooke frantically unclasped the heavy gold watch and threw it out the window of the moving car.
We watched it shatter against the wet pavement, but the damage was already done.
Evan knew we were together, and he knew we were heading north toward the financial district.
I ordered the driver to take us to Dana's underground parking garage, hoping the concrete would block any remaining signals.
My phone rang, displaying a restricted number, and I answered it on speakerphone so Brooke could hear.
Evan's voice echoed through the car, stripped of its usual corporate charm and dripping with pure malice.
He warned me that if I handed the flash drive over to Dana, he would ruin my life permanently.
He claimed he had kept copies of my old strategic marketing files from Northline Creative.
He had manipulated those files years ago to make it look like I had committed corporate espionage.
I felt a cold sweat break out on the back of my neck as I realized the depth of his long-term manipulation.
He had planned my destruction years before he ever met Brooke.
I ended the call and looked at Brooke, who was now trembling uncontrollably in the corner of the seat.
We pulled into the secure garage, and Dana was waiting by the elevator bank with two security guards.
I handed Dana the flash drive, praying it contained enough ammunition to destroy his blackmail attempt.
Dana plugged the drive into her secure tablet and waited for the decryption software to run.
She gasped loudly, looking up at me with an expression of absolute horror.

The files on the drive did not belong to Evan's company.
They belonged to a notorious international money laundering syndicate, and they had my name listed as the primary account holder.
