Chapter 5 - The Murder Plot

The recording continued to play, revealing a truth far darker than financial ruin.
"She got out of the car before it even left the neighborhood," Eric yelled on the tape.
"You hired an amateur, Arthur, and now she is safely in Paris instead of in a ditch."
I stared at Evelyn, my entire body trembling with profound horror.
The Paris trip was never a distraction to steal my money.
It was a carefully orchestrated execution.
They had tampered with my scheduled Uber, planning for me to die in a tragic highway accident.
When I canceled the ride at the last second, they assumed I had simply taken a different cab to the airport.
"They want you dead, Clara," Evelyn whispered, her face completely pale.
"If you die, Eric inherits the house, the life insurance, and total control of Nebula Systems."
"He would never have to explain the missing half-million dollars to a divorce judge."
I felt a cold, calculating rage replace the fear in my chest.
I had spent my career dismantling corrupt corporations, finding the hidden flaws in perfect systems.
Eric thought I was a naive, trusting wife who would blindly walk into her own slaughter.
He was about to learn exactly why my firm paid me a fortune to destroy fraudsters.
"I am not going to run, and I am not going to hide," I declared.
"I am going to dismantle his entire life piece by piece."
I started sifting through the decrypted banking files on Arthur's drive.
I found the exact routing numbers for the offshore accounts holding my stolen $480,000.
I also found the pending approval codes for the new $1.25 million loan against my house.
"The loan is scheduled to be funded and transferred at 9:00 AM on Monday," I noted.
"If I trigger a massive fraud alert through the federal banking commission, the funds will be frozen."
"But Eric will just forge your voice and authorize the release," Evelyn argued.
"Not if I initiate a Level 4 Corporate Lockdown on my own identity," I countered.
"It is a specialized protocol we use at my firm for compromised executives."
"Once it is triggered, the bank requires my physical presence and a retinal scan to move a single cent."
I logged into my secure work portal and initiated the lockdown protocol on every asset attached to my name.
I hit the enter key, effectively turning my financial identity into an impenetrable fortress.
Suddenly, Evelyn's television blared with a breaking local news alert.
The news anchor announced that a prominent banker had been found murdered in his office.
May you like
But the anchor's next sentence caused the room to spin completely out of control.
"Police have named the prime suspect in the murder, and they have issued a nationwide warrant for her arrest."
