Chapter 3 - The Poisoned Apple

The first week of Lily’s experimental treatment was a living nightmare. The chemicals they pumped into her small body made her violently ill. There were nights I lay on the cot beside her, listening to her ragged breathing, terrified that Marcus had been right—that she had "put up a good fight" and I was just torturing her at the end.
But every time I felt weak, I remembered the smirk on his face. I channeled that rage into strength.
Meanwhile, Marcus’s life was unravelling at warp speed. Arthur had initiated a forensic audit of Marcus’s business dealings. It turned out my husband hadn't just been planning to steal Lily’s medical funds; he had been siphoning small amounts from my father’s business accounts for years to fund his affair with my sister.
Arthur didn’t just file for divorce on my behalf; he filed criminal charges for embezzlement.

I received a text from a mutual friend back home. It was a picture of Marcus being escorted out of his office building in handcuffs. The caption read: Thought you should know. The police just raided his firm.
I showed the picture to Professor Paws, Lily’s stuffed bear. “Looks like karma works faster than the justice system,” I whispered.
