Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Victory

Five years later.

The sun was setting over the Puget Sound, casting a golden hue across our backyard. I was standing on the porch, holding a glass of wine, watching a twelve-year-old Lily run across the grass with her new golden retriever. She was tall, healthy, and fiercely independent.

My phone buzzed on the patio table. It was an email from Arthur Vance.

Just wanted to let you know, Marcus was released on parole today. He’s working at a car wash in the valley. Chloe is still struggling, trying to get child support he can't pay. They are miserable. You, however, are thriving. Happy anniversary of the best decision you ever made.

I smiled, taking a sip of my wine.

I didn't feel the need to gloat. I didn't feel anger. I just felt an overwhelming sense of peace.

Marcus had smirked and said Lily had a "good run." He was right about one thing. She did have a good run. A run that would last a long, beautiful lifetime.

“Mom! Watch this!” Lily yelled, throwing a frisbee perfectly into the air for the dog to catch. She turned to me, her face flushed with pure, unadulterated joy.

I raised my glass to her.

They had tried to take everything from me. But in the end, they were left with nothing, and I kept the only thing that ever mattered. We had won.
