Chapter 9 - The Dead Man's Switch

I huddled behind the wooden crates, holding my son tightly as bullets rained down around us.

Marcus was screaming in rage, ordering his remaining men to flank our position.

Arthur continued to fire from his hidden sniper perch, keeping the syndicate pinned down behind their vehicles.

I pulled the burner phone out of my pocket, remembering a final detail from Troy’s video in the morgue.

Troy had mentioned a digital fail-safe, a program he had spent three years building to destroy the syndicate completely.

The screen of the burner phone displayed a single, large red button labeled 'Execute Command'.

I realized Troy had gathered evidence on every corrupt cop, politician, and cartel member on Marcus's payroll.

If I pressed the button, all the encrypted files would be instantly transmitted to the FBI, the DEA, and the national press.

Marcus yelled from across the yard, threatening to throw a grenade behind our cover if I didn't step out.

I looked at my son, wiped the blood from his cheek, and told him everything was going to be fine.

I pressed the red button on the screen and watched a green loading bar race to one hundred percent.

The phone beeped loudly, displaying a message that the data upload was entirely successful.

Suddenly, Marcus stepped around the edge of the shipping container, leveling his gun at my face.

He had managed to slip past Arthur's line of sight, and his eyes were filled with murderous intent.

He pulled the hammer back on his weapon, laughing at my futile attempt to hide.

Before he could pull the trigger, a blinding spotlight from a police helicopter illuminated the entire shipyard.

The deafening sound of a dozen armored vehicles smashing through the chain-link gates echoed through the night.

Scores of heavily armed FBI tactical agents swarmed the docks, shouting through megaphones for everyone to drop their weapons.

Marcus froze, his arrogant expression melting into absolute panic as laser sights painted his chest.

He realized his entire criminal empire had just been dismantled by the accountant he had underestimated.

He dropped his weapon, fell to his knees, and placed his hands behind his head in defeat.

The tactical agents rushed forward, securing Marcus and his men in heavy steel handcuffs.

An FBI medic ran over to us, checking my son for severe injuries while wrapping a thermal blanket around my shoulders.

I looked up toward the darkness of the crane and saw Arthur giving me a slow, proud salute.
