Chapter 5 - The Sins of the Father

Troy’s voice echoed softly in the silent, freezing morgue.

He looked older in the video, carrying a weight I had never noticed during our marriage.

He explained that everything began three years ago, shortly before I found the missing money.

My late father, a man I had always believed was an honest construction worker, had a dark secret.

My father had stolen five million dollars from a ruthless international crime syndicate before he passed away.

The syndicate had finally tracked down our family, assuming I knew where the stolen fortune was hidden.

They had approached Troy in secret, threatening to slaughter me and our children if the debt was not paid.

Troy knew I had absolutely no idea about my father's criminal past or the missing money.

He chose to carry the burden entirely on his own to keep me safe from their violent world.

He drained our savings, took out massive secret loans, and began paying the syndicate in installments at that hotel.

He accepted my accusations of infidelity and allowed me to divorce him, knowing it would legally separate me from the danger.

He sacrificed our beautiful marriage, his reputation, and his own happiness just to keep a target off my back.

Tears streamed down my face as I realized the immense depth of his unconditional love.

The video concluded with a final, terrifying warning from my brave husband.

He said the money had run out, and the syndicate would come for our children to force my hand.

The tablet screen went completely black, plunging the morgue back into silence.

Suddenly, the burner phone I had taken from Troy's apartment began to ring in my pocket.

I answered the call with trembling hands, afraid of who might be on the other end.

A heavily disguised, mechanical voice spoke a single, chilling sentence.

The voice informed me that they had successfully kidnapped my son from his dormitory.

They demanded I deliver the remaining two million dollars of my father's debt by midnight, or my son would die.

I fell to my knees on the cold tile floor, clutching the phone in absolute despair.

I had no money, no allies, and less than twelve hours to save my child's life.

Then, I heard the distinctive click of a gun being cocked right behind my head.
