Chapter 6 - THE BRIBE

The day before the custody hearing, there was a sharp knock on my apartment door.

I looked through the peephole. It was Beatrice Vance, wearing a tailored Chanel suit and clutching a designer handbag.

I didn't open the door. I left the chain on and cracked it an inch. "You aren't supposed to be here, Beatrice."

"Oh, stop the theatrics, Maya," she sneered, pushing her manicured fingers against the door. "I’m here to make you a very generous offer. Let me in."

"Say it through the crack."

Beatrice sighed, disgusted by my lack of compliance. She reached into her purse and pulled out a cashier's check.

"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars," Beatrice said, holding it up to the crack. "Tax-free. It’s yours today. All you have to do is drop the police charges, agree to 50/50 custody, and sign a non-disclosure agreement stating this little balcony incident was a mutual misunderstanding."

I stared at the check. That kind of money could pay for Lily’s entire college tuition. It could buy us a house far away from the city. Beatrice saw me looking and smiled her cruel, reptilian smile.

"Julian is going to be a partner at his firm next month," Beatrice said. "A felony charge will ruin his career. And if you fight us in court, I will spend millions dragging your name through the mud until they take that child away from you completely. Take the money, Maya."

I pulled out my phone and held it up. The red record button was blinking.

"Did you just attempt to bribe a witness in an active felony child abuse case, Beatrice?" I asked sweetly.

Beatrice went completely pale. She snatched the check back, her face contorting with rage. "You little bitch. We will crush you tomorrow."

"See you in court," I said, and slammed the door.
