Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN TRUTH

I sat in my attorney's office, feeling a wave of nausea. My lawyer, a sharp, no-nonsense woman named Evelyn, looked at me sympathetically.

"Maya, it’s a he-said-she-said," Evelyn explained. "Yes, we have Mr. Henderson, but Sterling will rip him apart on the stand. He’ll claim Henderson is a nosy neighbor who overreacted. We need hard proof that Julian locked her out intentionally and left for hours."

"He texted me!" I argued. "He said he was playing tennis!"

"And Sterling will argue Julian was joking in the text to annoy you, and that he was actually just in the other room the whole time," Evelyn sighed. "Family court judges hesitate to strip custody from wealthy, well-connected fathers without an absolute smoking gun."

I closed my eyes, terrified of the thought of Julian getting unsupervised weekends with my daughter.

And then, a memory hit me like a lightning bolt.

Two weeks ago, there had been a string of break-ins in our building. I had ordered a tiny, motion-activated security camera disguised as a phone charger and plugged it into the wall outlet facing the living room and the terrace doors. Julian thought I had returned it because he deemed it "paranoid."

I hadn't returned it. I had hidden it.

"Evelyn," I whispered, my heart pounding in my chest. "I think I have a video."
