Chapter 2 - The Contract of Shadows

The ballroom erupted into a frenzy of panicked whispers at my father's desperate confession.

I stared at the man who had raised me, finally understanding the true depth of his betrayal.

I was never a beloved daughter to him; I was simply a transaction meant to merge two criminal empires.

Julian looked like he was going to be sick, realizing he had just thrown away the keys to the city for Serena.

Serena glared at me, her fake innocence melting into ugly, unfiltered jealousy.

Nikolai did not even blink at the revelation of the secret syndicate contract.

"Then it seems I have acquired exactly what I came for," Nikolai said, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

He led me out of the Halston Hotel, leaving my ruined family trapped in the chaos of their own making.

A fleet of black armored SUVs waited at the curb, surrounded by dozens of armed men.

We rode in silence to his massive, glass-walled penthouse overlooking the city skyline.

Once inside, Nikolai poured two glasses of expensive scotch and handed one to me.

"You knew about the contract," I stated, taking a long sip of the burning liquid.

"I know everything that happens in Chicago," he replied, walking toward his massive mahogany desk.

He opened a locked drawer and tossed a thick manila folder onto the glass coffee table.

"I also know that you are the only one in your family with the intellect to actually run their shipping ports," he added.

I opened the folder, expecting to see financial documents or shipping manifestos.

Instead, hundreds of candid photographs of me spilled out onto the table.

They were pictures of me at the library, at coffee shops, and walking through the park over the last five years.

"I didn't choose you tonight, Evelyn," Nikolai whispered, stepping terrifyingly close to me.

"I have been waiting for five years for Julian to make a mistake so I could finally claim what is mine."
