Chapter 2 - The Ex-Fiance

I stared at the piece of paper in absolute disbelief.
The signature at the bottom of the page looked exactly like mine.
"That is a forgery," I told the officer, my voice trembling with rage.
The policeman sighed again and handed the paper back to my sister.
"We cannot prove that tonight, which makes this a civil matter for the courts," he explained.
He told me that if I tried to force my way inside, he would have to arrest me for disturbing the peace.
Bethany offered me a sickeningly sweet smile and quietly shut my own front door in my face.
I had no choice but to drive to a cheap motel two towns over.
I sat on the edge of a sagging mattress and called Richard to explain the disaster.
He promised me that we would file an emergency eviction injunction the moment the courthouse opened in the morning.
I barely slept that night, my mind racing with thoughts of my family destroying everything I had built.
At dawn, I opened the security application on my phone to check the live feed from my driveway.
A large white moving truck was parked directly on my freshly manicured lawn.
Kenneth, my brother-in-law, was carrying my expensive leather sofa out the front door and loading it into the truck.
They were not just moving in; they were throwing all of my belongings away.
I watched in horror as a second vehicle pulled into the driveway.
A man wearing a dark blue work shirt stepped out of the van holding a heavy drill.
He walked up to my front door and began dismantling my electronic deadbolt.
I zoomed in on the camera feed to see the locksmith's face.
My breath hitched in my throat when he turned toward the lens.
May you like
It was Mark, the man I had broken off an engagement with three years ago.
Mark stared directly into my security camera, smiled a wicked grin, and held up a massive cashiers check with my mother's name on it.
