Chapter 9 - The House of Cards Falls

We bound Mary-Ann and her guard with zip-ties Marcus had brought in his tactical bag. We locked them both inside the very cell Mary-Ann had used to torture Julian. I left the memory pills scattered on the floor right outside the bars, a poetic reminder of her cruelty.

With Julian leaning heavily on me, we made our way back up the service elevator.

Marcus had already initiated the next phase. He didn't just call the police—Mary-Ann had too many people on her payroll for that. Instead, Marcus hacked into the gala's audiovisual system.

As we slipped out the back exit into the cool night air, the string quartet in the grand ballroom was abruptly cut off.

Every massive television screen, every projector in the mansion, suddenly switched on. The high-society guests gasped as the video Julian had recorded on the SD card began to play on a loop, his broken voice echoing over the high-end speakers.

“The woman I married… she’s a monster. She has me locked away. She’s stealing everything.”

Following the video, Marcus broadcasted the Arkansas mugshot of Mary-Ann Hodges, side-by-side with her fake Victoria Sterling passport, along with all the offshore wire transfers proving her massive embezzlement scheme.

We drove away in the catering van just as the chaotic wail of police sirens began to echo through the Beverly Hills canyons. The FBI, local news choppers, and the LAPD were swarming the estate. Mary-Ann’s empire of lies was crumbling in real-time, broadcasted live to the very elite circle she had manipulated for years.

In the back of the van, Julian sat wrapped in a shock blanket. He looked at me, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice broken. "I traded my soul for gold, Sarah. And it almost cost Lily her life. I will never, ever forgive myself."

I looked at him. The arrogant, untouchable man I used to know was gone. All that was left was a broken survivor.

"I don't need your apology, Julian," I said softly. "I just need you to be a father to her now."

He nodded, burying his face in his hands as he wept.
