Chapter 10 - The Sunlight

Six months later.
The trial of Mary-Ann Hodges was the media event of the decade. The tabloids dubbed her the "Counterfeit Queen." Facing charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, wire fraud, and identity theft, her high-priced lawyers abandoned her once her assets were frozen. She was sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
The real Victoria Sterling’s immense fortune was tied up in probate, but Julian managed to recover the patents and funds Mary-Ann had forced him to sign away.
It was a sunny Tuesday afternoon in a quiet park in Queens. I sat on a wooden bench, watching Lily climb the jungle gym. She was laughing, her bright energy fully restored, the nightmares of the past finally fading.
Footsteps crunched on the gravel.
Julian walked up. He looked much healthier now. He had put on weight, the dark circles under his eyes were gone, and he wore a simple sweater and jeans instead of his usual designer suits. He held a small pink box from Lily's favorite bakery.
"Hey," he said softly, standing a respectful distance away.
"Hey," I replied.
"Her therapist said she's doing great," Julian noted, watching Lily swing from the monkey bars.
"She is. She's resilient," I said. I looked at him. We weren't getting back together. The scars were too deep, the history too fractured. He lived in a modest apartment in the city now, entirely focused on his physical recovery and earning back the right to be in his daughter’s life.
"Daddy!" Lily shouted, spotting him. She ran across the grass and launched herself into his arms.
Julian caught her, holding her tight, burying his face in her hair. When he looked at me over her shoulder, his eyes were full of a quiet, profound gratitude.

He had lost his millions. He had lost his status. He had survived a nightmare that almost erased his existence.
But as he sat down on the grass to share a cupcake with the daughter he almost lost, I knew he finally understood what true wealth was. The monsters were locked away, the ghosts had been banished, and for the first time in three years, we were finally safe in the light.
