Chapter 7 - The Tax Crisis

The revelation hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

I immediately drove back to the hotel and opened my laptop, my fingers flying frantically across the keyboard.

I logged into the county assessor's public database and searched for my father's property address.

The screen loaded with a bright red warning banner spanning across the top of the page.

The property was officially in severe delinquency due to exactly three years of unpaid taxes.

The total owed, including exorbitant penalties and interest, was nearly eighty thousand dollars.

But the most terrifying detail was printed at the very bottom of the official page.

Because the debt had reached its legal limit, the house was scheduled for a public tax auction in exactly forty-eight hours.

Evelyn had intentionally ignored the tax bills to quietly force a county foreclosure sale.

Once the county sold the house, she planned to claim the remaining equity cash as her personal hardship allowance.

She was willing to destroy my father's legacy just to line her own pockets.

I checked my personal savings, but Frank had successfully frozen my accounts through his offshore wire transfer.

I was completely out of cash, and I had less than two days to save my childhood home.

I needed to find a hidden asset, something my father might have left behind for absolute emergencies.

I remembered grabbing a box of my father's old office files from the basement before I moved out years ago.

The box was currently sitting in the trunk of my car.

I rushed down to the hotel parking garage and tore open the dusty cardboard flaps.

I searched through hundreds of old receipts, faded blueprints, and useless tax returns.

At the very bottom of the box, hidden inside a sealed manila envelope, I found a small brass key.

It was wrapped in a handwritten note that simply said, "For Claire, when you finally see the truth."

The key belonged to a private safe deposit box at a local, independent bank downtown.

I waited agonizingly until the bank opened the next morning and drove there immediately.

The bank manager escorted me to the vault and left me alone in a private viewing room.

I opened the long metal box, expecting to find enough cash or gold to pay the back taxes.

Instead, I found a thick, black leather ledger and a stack of confidential medical reports.

I opened the ledger and realized it was a detailed log of my father's worsening health condition before he died.

He had secretly hired a private laboratory to test his daily meals and medications.

The final report confirmed that Evelyn had been slowly and systematically poisoning him with arsenic for months.
