Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I covered Lily's ears tightly as the echoing gunfire finally faded into silence.

Bruce casually brushed a few pieces of broken glass off the shoulder of his polo shirt.

He looked completely unharmed and terrifyingly calm standing amidst the destruction.

"Bruce, what is going on here?" I screamed from my position on the floor.

He didn't even bother to look down at his wife or his daughter.

He pointed a finger directly at his own brother-in-law standing near the buffet.

"There he is," Bruce told the heavily armed men beside him.

"He's the rogue hacker who orchestrated the entire theft from your boss."

Jim gasped loudly and dropped his silver handgun clattering onto the marble floor.

"You're setting me up for this?" Jim choked out in pure shock.

"You told me this was a foolproof plan that would save both of us!"

The cartel enforcers grabbed Jim roughly and forced him down to his knees.

Bruce finally lowered his gaze to look down at me and Lily holding each other.

"I needed a believable fall guy, Sarah," he said in a cold, unfamiliar voice.

"Jim was desperate, stupid, and willing to do the dirty work while I managed the accounts."

I held my daughter even tighter, feeling completely sick to my stomach.

The gentle man I had been happily married to for seven years was a ruthless monster.

"I retrieved the bag from the room," Bruce told the tall cartel leader.

"Take Jim and the money, and we can consider this matter permanently closed."

The cartel leader slowly shook his head side to side.

"The boss doesn't like loose ends of any kind," the leader growled deeply.

"We are taking all of you to the docks to sort this out."

Bruce's confident, smug expression instantly crumbled into genuine fear.

One of the armed men grabbed my arm and dragged me up from the floor.

He pressed the cold steel barrel of an assault rifle directly against Lily's back.
