Chapter 5 - The Stepmother

I stared at my stepmother, the woman who had spent two decades perfecting the art of quiet manipulation.
She looked entirely out of place in my modest apartment, wearing a pristine white trench coat and holding the silver thumb drive like a weapon.
“You broke into my home,” I said, keeping my voice dangerously low.
Vanessa smiled, a cold, predatory expression.
“I have a key, Emily.”
“Arthur insisted on keeping one for ‘emergencies’.”
I felt a sickening violation. My father had possessed a key to my sanctuary and handed it to his wife to use against me.
“What do you want, Vanessa?” I demanded.
She held up the silver thumb drive.
“I copied your personal backup files before I smashed your computer.”
“I know about the meeting with Elias Vance.”
“I know you plan to expose Ryan’s embezzlement tomorrow morning.”
I took a slow, calculated step toward her.
“Then you know your son is going to federal prison.”
Vanessa laughed, a sharp, bitter sound that echoed in the ruined living room.
“Ryan is an idiot,” she spat, completely shattering the illusion of the doting mother.
“I have spent twenty years securing my place in the Callahan empire, and I am not going to let that arrogant little fool destroy my comfortable retirement.”
I stopped moving, genuinely surprised by her venom.
“You’re willing to let Ryan take the fall?” I asked.
Vanessa walked toward my kitchen counter, pouring herself a glass of water from my pitcher.
“Arthur is planning to throw Ryan to the wolves to save his own legacy,” she explained calmly.
“If you expose the embezzlement, the SEC seizes all of Arthur’s assets, including my offshore accounts.”
“I walk away with nothing.”
She turned to face me, her eyes glittering with dark calculation.
“But if we work together, Emily, we can destroy Arthur and keep the money.”
I crossed my arms, staring at her in disbelief.
“You want me to form an alliance with you?”
“Yes,” Vanessa replied smoothly.
“I have the original, un-doctored server logs that prove Arthur fabricated the espionage charges against your company.”
“I can prove he planted the code on your hard drives.”
My heart hammered against my ribs.
If she had those logs, I wouldn't just expose them; I could have Arthur arrested for perjury and corporate sabotage.
“What is your price?” I asked coldly.
Vanessa smiled in triumph.
“You don't expose Ryan’s embezzlement to Apex.”
“Instead, you use the server logs to blackmail Arthur into quietly signing his entire fifty-one percent controlling stake of Callahan Freight over to me.”
“I fire Ryan, sell the company to Apex myself, and you get your fifty-million-dollar contract from Elias.”
It was a brilliant, incredibly selfish plan.
She was willing to completely betray her husband and exile her own son just to secure the massive buyout cash for herself.
“Why should I trust you?” I challenged.
Vanessa reached into her designer purse and pulled out a manila envelope.
She tossed it onto my kitchen counter.
“Because I brought a down payment.”
I walked over and opened the envelope.
Inside was a signed, notarized confession from Ryan, dated twelve years ago.
It explicitly detailed how he had been driving drunk during the accident, and how Arthur had coerced him into framing me.
My vision blurred with hot, angry tears.
This was the proof I had needed to clear my name for over a decade.
“I kept it as an insurance policy against Arthur,” Vanessa admitted.
“Now, it’s yours.”
I looked at the confession, and then up at the ruthless woman standing in my kitchen.
“Deal,” I said.
“Give me the server logs.”
Vanessa handed me the silver thumb drive with a satisfied smirk.
“I’ll see you at the press conference tomorrow, Emily.”
She walked out of my apartment, leaving me alone with the evidence.
I plugged the thumb drive into my backup laptop.
The files opened immediately.
I scanned through the server logs, verifying the timestamps that proved Arthur’s sabotage.
But as I scrolled to the bottom of the encrypted folder, I noticed a secondary, hidden audio file.
I clicked play.
The recording was a phone call between Vanessa and Elias Vance, time-stamped just thirty minutes before my meeting at the Four Seasons.
“Emily is taking the bait,” Vanessa’s recorded voice said smoothly.
“She thinks Apex wants to buy her company.”
“Excellent,” Elias Vance replied on the recording.

“Once she uses the fake server logs to blackmail Arthur into signing the company over to you, we destroy her.”
“Apex will absorb Callahan Freight, and we will crush Hartwell Supply Chain Solutions by lunch.”
