Chapter 4 - The Alliance

I walked into the dimly lit, ultra-exclusive lounge of the Four Seasons hotel exactly one hour later.
Elias Vance was sitting in a high-backed leather booth in the far corner.
He was in his late forties, dressed in a sharp, minimalist black suit. He radiated the kind of quiet, absolute power that made billionaires nervous.
I slid into the booth across from him.
He didn't offer a handshake or pleasantries.
He immediately slid a thick manila folder across the polished mahogany table.
“Arthur Callahan is bleeding money,” Elias stated flatly.
I looked at him in surprise.
“Callahan Freight just posted record profits last quarter.”
Elias offered a thin, humorless smile.
“Creative accounting, Ms. Callahan.”
“Open the folder.”
I flipped open the cover. Inside were dozens of highly classified financial documents.
“Your stepbrother, Ryan, has been secretly funneling company funds into a series of offshore shell corporations for the last four years,” Elias explained.
“He is severely addicted to high-stakes, unregulated cryptocurrency gambling.”
I stared at the staggering numbers on the paper.
Ryan had embezzled nearly twenty million dollars from Callahan Freight.
“Does my father know?” I asked, completely stunned.
“Arthur found out six months ago,” Elias confirmed.
“That is why he suddenly announced his retirement.”
“He is stepping down and putting Ryan in the CEO position so Ryan can take the fall when the SEC inevitably audits the company.”
My stomach churned.
Arthur wasn't retiring out of pride.
He was orchestrating a massive cover-up to protect his own legacy, even if it meant sending his beloved stepson to federal prison.
“And the raid on my company?” I asked, looking up at Elias.
“A desperate attempt to secure a liquid asset,” Elias replied.
“Arthur knows Hartwell’s algorithms are worth fifty million dollars to the right buyer.”
“He was planning to steal your intellectual property, sell it to a tech giant, and use the cash to quietly replace the money Ryan stole before the feds noticed it was missing.”
It all made terrifying, sickening sense.
I wasn't just a convenient scapegoat this time.
I was their only lifeline.
“Why are you showing me this?” I asked, closing the folder.
Elias leaned forward, his dark eyes locking onto mine.
“Because Apex Global wants to acquire Callahan Freight for pennies on the dollar.”
“We want you to publicly expose the embezzlement and the illegal raid.”
“When the stock price crashes tomorrow morning, Apex will initiate a hostile takeover.”
I absorbed the magnitude of his proposal.
If I did this, Callahan Freight would cease to exist.
My father’s legacy would be completely eradicated, and Ryan would go to prison.
“What do I get out of this?” I asked coldly.
Elias smiled, clearly appreciating my ruthlessness.
“Apex will drop a fifty-million-dollar cash injection into Hartwell Supply Chain Solutions tomorrow afternoon.”
“We will make you the exclusive logistics software provider for our entire global fleet.”
“You will be a billionaire by forty.”
It was the ultimate revenge.
I would destroy the men who had humiliated me and secure an untouchable empire in a single move.
“I’ll do it,” I said, extending my hand across the table.
Elias shook it firmly.
“Good.”
“I have a press conference scheduled for eight a.m. tomorrow in the lobby of your father’s building.”
“Be there.”
I left the hotel feeling a dark, powerful energy surging through my veins.
I drove back to my apartment, ready to spend the night preparing the financial documents for the press.
When I unlocked my front door, I immediately noticed the silence was wrong.
My apartment had been tossed.
Drawers were emptied, cushions were slashed, and my personal computer was completely smashed on the floor.
Standing in the center of my ruined living room was Vanessa.
She was holding a small, silver thumb drive in her manicured hand.
May you like
“Hello, Emily,” Vanessa said smoothly.
“Did you really think I wouldn't track your car after you met with Apex?”
