Chapter 6 - The Double Agent
"I knew you would finally come to your senses, Leo," Richard purred smoothly through the phone.
"I will send a private driver to pick you up at the end of your street in ten minutes."
I hung up the phone and quickly shoved a few clothes into my old school backpack.
I left a hastily scribbled note on the kitchen counter for Mom and Ray.
The note simply said, "I have to fix this. Please trust me."
I snuck out the back door and walked down the dark street to wait for the car.
A sleek black town car pulled up exactly when Richard said it would.
I climbed into the plush leather backseat, preparing myself to play the ultimate double agent.
Richard was staying in the massive penthouse suite of the most expensive hotel downtown.
When I walked through the double doors, he was pouring himself a glass of expensive bourbon.
"Welcome to your real life, son," Richard smiled, gesturing to the incredible view of the city skyline.
"I do not care about the view," I told him, keeping my voice cold and detached.
"I just want to make sure you keep your promise about Ray and the house."
Richard chuckled, swirling the amber liquid in his crystal glass.
"Oh, the house is perfectly safe as long as you do exactly what I say."
"But Ray is going to have to lose custody of those brats," Richard added casually.
My heart hammered painfully in my chest, but I forced my face to remain completely neutral.
"Why do you even care about Ray's kids?" I asked, pretending to sound bored.
"Because Brenda is paying me a very large sum of money to facilitate the foreclosure," Richard confessed arrogantly.
"It is a mutually beneficial arrangement to destroy a man who thought he could replace me."
I discreetly reached into my pocket and pressed the record button on my cell phone.
"So, you want me to sign the corporate papers?" I asked, guiding the conversation.
"Tomorrow morning, my personal lawyer will bring the final documents here," Richard confirmed.
"Once you sign them, the shell company becomes completely active, and Ray loses everything."

He took a slow sip of his bourbon, staring at me with predatory eyes.
"But if you try to cross me, Leo, I will make sure your mother goes to federal prison for extortion."
