Chapter 10 - The Real Father

When we finally pulled into our cracked concrete driveway, Mom came running out of the front door.
She threw her arms around Ray’s neck, weeping tears of absolute, unfiltered joy.
I stood by the porch, watching my real parents hold each other tightly in the morning light.
Agent Vance had officially voided the fraudulent foreclosure, meaning our house was completely safe forever.
The state had instantly restored the college fund Ray and Mom had sacrificed so much to build for me.
Later that afternoon, a sleek tow truck arrived to repossess the brand-new car Richard had left behind.
I did not feel a single ounce of sadness as I watched the expensive vehicle disappear down our quiet street.
I walked back into the kitchen, where Ray was carefully helping Danny and Cara unpack their weekend bags.
They were moving into our house permanently, and the noisy, chaotic energy felt absolutely perfect.
I sat down at the kitchen table and pulled my heavy chemistry textbook out of my backpack.
Ray patted Cara’s head, wiped his hands on a dish towel, and sat down right across from me.
"Are we dropping the class today?" Ray asked with a familiar, warm smile.
"No," I replied, opening the heavy book to the periodic table.
I looked directly into his kind, tired eyes and felt a massive wave of gratitude wash over me entirely.
"Thanks for helping me, Dad," I said quietly, saying the word for the very first time.
Ray froze for a second, his tough exterior melting away into a look of pure, unconditional love.
Everything was finally right in our small, perfectly imperfect world.
But late that night, I sat alone on the edge of my bed and pulled the folded paper from my pocket.
It was the mysterious note I had found tucked tightly under the windshield wiper of Ray's truck at the hotel.
The note was written on thick, expensive stationary originating from a maximum-security prison in Chicago.

The elegant, terrifying handwriting read, "Richard did not buy your debt with his own money; he used mine."
"And I always collect what is rightfully owed to me, Leo."
