Chapter 4 - The Forged Documents

I shoved Evelyn away from me, my heart pounding rapidly against my ribs.

"Stay away from my children," I warned her, my voice trembling with suppressed rage.

Evelyn merely adjusted her diamond necklace and offered a flawless, innocent smile.

Luca walked into the foyer, his commanding presence immediately silencing the tension.

"Evelyn, go to the east wing," he ordered without even looking at her.

Her smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she obediently walked away.

Luca turned to me, his dark eyes completely unreadable.

"I have prepared the nursery suite for you and the twins."

"You will have everything you need, but you are not allowed to leave the grounds."

I followed him up the grand marble staircase, my mind racing with ways to escape this golden cage.

The suite was beautiful, filled with expensive toys and soft beds, but it felt like a prison.

Once the twins fell asleep, I decided to confront Luca in his private study.

I needed to establish boundaries before he completely took over their lives.

I quietly walked down the dimly lit hallway toward his office.

The heavy oak door was slightly ajar, and I could hear Luca arguing with someone on the phone.

"I do not care how much it costs, find out who ordered the break-in at her house!" Luca shouted.

I peeked through the crack in the door.

Luca slammed the phone down and aggressively rubbed his temples.

My eyes wandered to his massive mahogany desk.

A thick, manila folder lay open under the glow of a desk lamp.

The top page caught my attention because it bore the logo of my old fertility clinic.

Luca suddenly left the room through a side door to pour himself a drink from the bar.

I seized the opportunity and slipped silently into the study.

I grabbed the medical file and read the first page.

It was a complete medical report dated five years ago.

The document stated clearly that Luca Moretti was perfectly fertile.

The next page was a fabricated report stating that Nia Carter was entirely barren.

Attached to the fake report was a cleared check for two million dollars.

The signature on the check belonged to Luca's most trusted lawyer and right-hand man, Marcus.

Luca had not simply assumed I was the problem.

His own empire had paid to forge my medical records to force our divorce.

Before I could process the betrayal, the study door clicked shut behind me.

The lock turned with a heavy, metallic thud.

I spun around and came face to face with Evelyn.

She was holding a suppressed silver pistol, pointing it directly at my chest.
