Chapter 3 - The Hospital Betrayal

I froze in the kitchen, the weight of Richard's blackmail crushing the breath out of my lungs.
He had orchestrated a perfect, devastating trap to ensure my permanent silence.
If I went to the police with my suspicions, he would simply trigger an anonymous tip about my work computer.
I would be thrown in federal prison, and Chloe would be left entirely at his mercy.
The garage door opened, and Meredith walked back inside holding her digital camera.
"Alright, let's get this show on the road!" she announced cheerfully.
I quickly forced a fake, apologetic smile onto my face for my wife's sake.
"Meredith, Chloe just threw up in her bathroom," I lied smoothly.
"I think it might be food poisoning, so I am going to run her over to the urgent care clinic."
Meredith's face fell in disappointment, but her maternal concern quickly took over.
"Oh no, my poor baby, do you want me to come with you?" she asked anxiously.
"No, you and Richard go ahead and save our seats at the auditorium just in case she feels better," I insisted.
Richard glared at me, clearly furious that I had outmaneuvered him in front of his daughter.
I ran upstairs, grabbed Chloe, and hurried her out through the back patio door to my car.
I drove far past the local clinic and headed straight for the pediatric emergency room at the city hospital.
We were quickly escorted into a private examination room by a sympathetic triage nurse.
A female pediatrician named Dr. Evans came in to examine the terrifying marks on Chloe's back.
I stood by the door, feeling a small sense of relief that the medical evidence was finally being documented.
Dr. Evans finished her examination and gently pulled Chloe's shirt back down.
"Chloe, can you tell me who put these marks on your body?" the doctor asked softly.
I smiled encouragingly at my daughter, waiting for her to finally expose Richard to the authorities.

Chloe looked at me, her eyes brimming with fresh tears, and then she looked back at the doctor.
"My dad did it," Chloe whispered, pointing a shaking finger directly at me.
