Chapter 10 - The Aftermath

I looked up at the wall and realized the red digital numbers had just hit three seconds.

I threw the useless detonator at Arthur's unconscious body, grabbed Chloe securely in my arms, and ran.

"Take a deep breath!" I screamed, launching both of us off the concrete ledge and plunging directly into the deep water basin.

The frigid, dark water enveloped us completely just as a catastrophic, deafening roar tore through the warehouse above.

The concussive shockwave rippled through the water, but the heavy liquid successfully shielded us from the intense heat and shrapnel.

I held onto Chloe tightly, swimming toward the flickering emergency lights illuminating the surface of the basin.

We broke through the water, gasping for precious air as the blazing ruins of the warehouse collapsed around us.

Police divers and rescue boats flooded into the basin moments later, pulling us safely from the freezing water.

Paramedics wrapped us in thick thermal blankets, and I held Chloe against my chest, refusing to let her go.

Arthur Vance was somehow found alive in the rubble, severely burned and permanently paralyzed by the falling debris.

Federal agents immediately placed him under arrest, ensuring the monster would spend the rest of his miserable life locked in a medical prison.

Detective Miller secured the stolen documents from the wreckage, completely clearing my name of all false charges.

Meredith arrived at the scene in a police cruiser, breaking through the barricades and falling to her knees as she wrapped her arms around us.

We held each other in the pouring rain, crying tears of profound joy and overwhelming relief.

The nightmare was finally over, and we spent the next several weeks healing in the safety of a new, secure home.

Chloe's bruises slowly faded away, replaced by the bright, happy smile I had fought so hard to protect.

One month later, I was cleaning out the dusty attic to make room for Chloe's new piano and toys.

I found a small, rusted metal lockbox hidden beneath the floorboards, belonging to Meredith's late mother.

I pried the rusty lid open, expecting to find old love letters or meaningless family trinkets.

Inside was a faded polaroid photograph of Meredith's mother standing next to the imposter, Arthur Vance, holding hands and smiling brightly.

Written on the back of the photo, in Meredith's mother's elegant handwriting, was a chilling note that read, "Our plan worked perfectly, the real Richard is finally gone."
