Chapter 5 - The Dark Trap
The heavy steel door crashed violently onto the concrete floor of the underground garage, sending a thick cloud of gray dust into the air.
Peter instinctively threw his body over Drew and Lily, shielding their fragile frames from the dangerous flying shrapnel.
The two corrupt officers stepped slowly into the dim garage, their weapons raised and sweeping the shadows for any sign of movement.
Reena walked casually behind them, her high heels clicking menacingly against the concrete in a slow, predatory rhythm.
She called out to Peter in a sickeningly sweet voice, promising that it would all be over quickly if he just handed the children back to her.
Peter frantically scanned the dimly lit garage, his eyes locking onto a rusted, heavy metal grate covering an old municipal drainage tunnel.
He whispered urgently to Drew, instructing the brave little boy to take his sister and crawl deep into the narrow, dark pipe.
Drew hesitated for a heartbreaking second, but the sound of another pump from the deadly shotgun forced him to obey his uncle's desperate command.
Peter lifted the heavy iron grate just enough for the children to slide into the pitch-black tunnel, promising he would find them on the other side.
He quietly lowered the grate back into place, purposely making a loud noise on the opposite side of the garage to draw the killers away.
The officers immediately opened fire on the empty shadows, the deafening gunshots echoing terribly through the cavernous concrete structure.
Peter used the distraction to sprint toward a parked maintenance truck, grabbing a heavy steel wrench from the open toolbed.
He crept silently behind the second officer, swinging the heavy wrench with brutal force against the back of the man's knees.
The officer collapsed with a cry of pain, his shotgun clattering loudly against the hard floor.
