Chapter 1 - The Accusation

The sterile smell of the hospital waiting room offered Peter Calder absolutely no comfort as he paced the polished linoleum floor.

He could still vividly see the horrific angle of his young nephew's broken leg dragging across the rough wooden porch.

He could still feel the feather-light weight of his starving three-year-old niece as she desperately clung to her brother's dirty shirt.

He watched through the thick observation window as the pediatric doctors carefully cast Drew's badly fractured tibia.

In the bed next to him, kind nurses gently hooked tiny Lily up to intravenous fluids to treat her severe dehydration and malnutrition.

A profound, unbreakable sense of purpose finally settled into Peter's heavy heart after three years of aimless grief over his brother Aaron's sudden death.

He had just knelt beside that hospital bed and promised the incredibly brave six-year-old boy that he would never let their cruel stepmother touch them again.

Peter felt a burning anger radiating through his veins as he thought about how many times Reena had turned him away from their front door.

He had stood on that porch with birthday presents and groceries, naively believing her lies about the children taking naps or feeling sick.

He realized now that while he was standing just feet away, Aaron's children were likely locked in the dark basement directly below his boots.

The quiet, steady hum of the pediatric ward was suddenly and violently shattered by the aggressive sliding of the main electronic double doors.

Reena burst into the emergency room lobby wearing expensive clothes and perfectly applied makeup that had been artificially smudged to mimic frantic tears.

She was flanked by two large, imposing police officers from the local precinct who looked highly agitated and ready for a physical altercation.

Peter stepped away from the observation window, placing his body firmly between the approaching officers and the door to the children's medical room.

Reena pointed a shaking, manicured finger directly at Peter's chest as a perfectly theatrical, fake sob escaped her trembling lips.

She screamed at the top of her lungs that Peter was a dangerous, obsessed lunatic who had just violently broken into her home to kidnap her precious babies.

She wailed to the crowded waiting room that Peter had dragged them through the dirt to frame her because he had always hated her.

The larger of the two police officers immediately unclipped his heavy steel handcuffs and marched directly toward Peter with a terrifyingly dark expression on his hardened face.
