Chapter 9 - The Escape

My entire reality completely collapsed in that tiny, gray room.
Meredith had orchestrated this entire nightmare from the very beginning.
She wanted me locked away in prison while she gave our daughter to absolute monsters.
I looked at the detective, realizing he had no idea he was just a pawn in her game.
"I need a glass of water," I whispered, faking a violent, choking coughing fit.
The detective rolled his eyes in annoyance and stood up.
"Don't try anything stupid," he warned before stepping out into the busy hallway.
The moment the heavy door clicked shut, I instantly jumped into action.
I grabbed the heavy metal chair and smashed it violently against the two-way mirror.
The thick glass shattered into a thousand pieces, revealing an empty observation room next door.
I climbed carefully through the broken window, ignoring the deep cuts on my hands.
I slipped out into the precinct hallway, moving silently past the busy cubicles.
I found the evidence lock-up room and waited in the shadows for a deputy to walk out.
I grabbed the door before it closed and slipped inside the cage.
I quickly found the plastic bin with my name written on it.
I took my wallet, my car keys, and the burner phone the kidnapper had left for me.
I snuck out the back loading dock of the police station and ran blindly into the rainy night.
I turned on the burner phone, praying silently that it still worked.
