Chapter 1 - The Empty Chair

I stared at the crumpled piece of paper in my trembling hands.
The childish scrawl felt heavier than any death warrant I had ever signed in my entire life.
"If I leave, will Mommy get to stay?"
Those innocent words instantly shattered the impenetrable, cold armor I had worn for nearly two decades.
My heart pounded aggressively against my ribs as I crushed the terrible note in my fist.
I looked down at the battered stuffed rabbit resting lonely on the cold marble floor.
Poppy was Lily's absolute most prized possession in the whole world.
She would never leave it behind unless she truly believed she was never coming back to this house.
"Marco!" I roared, my voice echoing violently through the massive, empty hallways of the estate.
My most trusted enforcer sprinted into the grand foyer within seconds.
He took one look at my furious face and immediately drew his heavy weapon.
"Lock down the entire compound right now."
"No one gets in or out of these gates without my explicit permission."
I marched directly toward the servants' quarters, completely ignoring the terrified looks of my extensive staff.
I brutally kicked open the wooden door to Clara's small, modest room.
Clara jumped up from her neatly made bed with sheer, unadulterated panic in her wide eyes.
"Where is she?" I demanded fiercely, scanning the tiny space.
Clara's face went completely pale as she looked past my broad shoulders into the empty hallway.
"She was just playing quietly in the rose garden ten minutes ago," Clara whispered in absolute horror.
I forcefully grabbed Clara's arm and dragged her swiftly toward the main security room in the west wing.
We burst into the surveillance center, deeply startling the armed guards stationed at the glowing monitors.
"Pull up the exterior garden cameras from the last fifteen minutes," I ordered with a dangerously cold tone.
The digital screens flickered brightly as the footage rapidly rewound to the requested time.
There she was, walking slowly toward the heavy iron gates with her tiny head bowed in deep sadness.
She slipped easily through a small gap in the wrought iron fencing that my careless men had neglected to weld shut.
Then, a rusted black van pulled up silently to the curb just outside the camera's full, clear view.
A heavily tattooed arm reached out from the sliding metal door and violently snatched the tiny girl off the sidewalk.
The van sped away aggressively, leaving nothing but empty, rain-slicked streets behind.

I zoomed in on the vehicle's blurry license plate, feeling a cold, sickening dread wash over my dark soul.
It was a vehicle legally registered to the Petrov syndicate, the most ruthless Russian cartel in the city.
