Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Mansion

“Get down!” Leo screamed into the darkness, launching his small body through the pitch-black void toward Emily’s wheelchair.

He tackled the fragile girl perfectly, sending them both tumbling onto the soft, thick rug just as a heavy gunshot violently shattered the glass table behind them.

Daniel yelled out in blind panic, diving recklessly behind a large leather sofa as the deafening echo of the gunshot rang through his ears.

“Vance, drop the weapon right now, or I swear I will kill you myself!” Daniel roared into the dark, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and paternal rage.

There was no answer from the security chief, only the terrifying, heavy sound of combat boots quickly retreating down the long hallway.

Emergency red backup lights suddenly flickered to life along the baseboards, casting long, bloody shadows across the ruined sunroom.

Daniel scrambled desperately across the floor, pulling Emily into a fierce, protective embrace while checking her frantically for any injuries.

“Are you hurt, baby? Are you okay?” Daniel practically sobbed, pressing his trembling face into her soft hair.

Emily shook her head weakly, pointing a shaking finger toward the shattered doorway where Vance had just escaped.

Leo slowly picked himself up from the floor, brushing the shattered glass from his clothes as he looked at the devastated billionaire.

“He’s not working alone, Mr. Daniel,” Leo warned urgently, his dark eyes scanning the shadowy corridor for any signs of movement.

Daniel's face hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated vengeance as he finally accepted the terrifying truth about his own household.

“I know,” Daniel whispered coldly, gently setting Emily back into her wheelchair before standing up to face the boy.

“But I need to keep the two of you safe while I tear this mansion apart looking for him.”

Daniel quickly ushered both children out of the ruined sunroom and practically dragged them up the stairs to the heavily fortified panic room in the guest wing.

He shoved Leo inside first, followed quickly by Emily, pressing a heavy button on the wall to seal the massive steel door.

“Lock yourselves inside and do not open this door for anyone but me, do you understand?” Daniel ordered, his eyes wild with adrenaline.

The heavy steel door slid shut with a deafening metallic clang, plunging the two children into the dimly lit, completely silent bunker.

Leo immediately checked the heavy locking mechanism, pulling out the folded charcoal drawing from his pocket to show Emily he had kept her secret safe.

For the next two hours, they sat in absolute, terrifying silence, listening desperately to the faint, muffled sounds of shouting echoing through the massive house above them.

Suddenly, the heavy electronic keypad on the inside of their fortified door beeped loudly, glowing with a sinister bright green light.

Leo’s blood ran completely cold as the heavy steel deadbolts began to slide back mechanically one by one.

Someone on the outside hadn't just bypassed the security system, they possessed the master override codes to open the vault.

The massive door slowly creaked open, revealing the terrifying silhouette of a person holding a gleaming medical syringe directly in the red emergency light.
