Chương 7 - The Interrogation Room

The FBI field office in Boston smelled of stale coffee and institutional floor wax.
Charlotte and I sat in a windowless interrogation room, the stark fluorescent lights humming aggressively above us.
We had been sitting there for exactly forty-two minutes since turning ourselves in.
I was terrified.
Charlotte looked like she was waiting for a delayed flight in a first-class lounge.
She had specifically requested to be arrested for corporate fraud and espionage, the exact charges Vale had threatened us with.
"Charlotte, are you absolutely sure this is going to work?" I whispered, glancing nervously at the two-way mirror.
"If the Director doesn't play along, we just handed Vale everything he needs on a silver platter."
"Relax," she replied, not looking away from the mirror.
"My father didn't just design government buildings; he designed the security architecture for this specific field office."
"He saved the Director's career a decade ago."
"The Director owes the Mercer family a debt, and men in his position take debts very seriously."
The heavy metal door clicked open, and a tall man in a sharp grey suit walked in.
He looked tired, his face lined with the stress of a long career in federal law enforcement.
He dropped a thick file onto the metal table and sat down across from us.
"Charlotte," he said, his voice a low rumble.
"Director Vance," she replied with a polite nod.
"You realize," Vance said, opening the file, "that walking into my lobby and confessing to corporate espionage is a highly unusual strategy for a CEO."
"I am not confessing to espionage," Charlotte corrected smoothly.
"I am reporting a systemic breach of federal security protocols orchestrated by Richard Vale."
Vance raised an eyebrow, leaning back in his chair.
"Vale is a highly respected investor with significant political connections."
"He also just handed us a recording of your brother violating the terms of his house arrest to hack your own servers."
"That recording is the bait," Charlotte explained, leaning forward.
"Vale used a backdoor in the federal ankle monitor system to illegally spy on a civilian."
"He didn't just hack Mercer & Rowe; he hacked the Department of Justice to get that recording."
Vance’s expression remained carefully neutral, but I saw a slight tightening around his eyes.
"That is a very serious accusation, Charlotte."
"Do you have proof?"
"No," Charlotte admitted freely.
"But you do."
She tapped the metal table.
"If you run a diagnostic on the surveillance feed Vale provided to the Hawthorne committee, you will find it was illegally accessed through a proxy server."
"Vale isn't just trying to steal my firm; he is demonstrating a terrifying vulnerability in your agency's monitoring system."
"If that gets out, it’s not just a corporate scandal; it’s a national security failure."
Vance stared at her for a long, silent moment, weighing the political fallout of her words.
"What exactly do you want, Charlotte?" he finally asked.
"I want you to use the full weight of the FBI to audit Richard Vale's private communications for the last forty-eight hours, citing a suspected breach of federal systems."
"You will find the emails proving he paid my junior architect to steal the Hawthorne blueprints."
Vance sighed heavily, closing the file.
"You are asking me to initiate a federal investigation based on a hunch to help you win a corporate bidding war."
"I am asking you to protect the integrity of your agency," Charlotte countered sharply.
"And in the process, you repay the debt you owe my father."
Vance looked down at the table, his fingers drumming a slow rhythm against the metal.
"I can't audit Vale's communications without probable cause," he said slowly.
"The illegal access of the ankle monitor is suspect, but it’s not enough to warrant a full wiretap on a man with his connections."
"I need something harder."
"Something undeniable."
Charlotte sat back, her plan suddenly hitting a massive roadblock.
We needed concrete proof that Vale was involved before the FBI would act, but we needed the FBI to act to get the proof.
It was an impossible catch-22.
I looked at my left hand, the heavy gold ring still resting on my finger.
The ring that started this entire cascade of chaos.
"What if we can give you probable cause?" I suddenly asked, speaking up for the first time.
Charlotte and Vance both turned to look at me, surprised.
"What if we can prove Vale is currently engaged in active extortion?" I continued, the idea forming rapidly in my mind.
"Extortion?" Vance asked, his interest piqued.
"Against who?"
"Against us," I said, looking at Charlotte.
"He threatened to destroy the firm if she didn't resign."
"But he doesn't know we're here."
"He thinks we're running out of time before the board vote."
I leaned across the table.
"If Charlotte calls him right now and offers to surrender the firm in exchange for his silence regarding the theft, he will accept the terms."
"He will admit to holding the evidence."
"If you record that call, is that enough probable cause?"
Vance stared at me, a slow, predatory smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"If you get him to admit he possesses stolen corporate property and is using it to force a resignation, that is textbook extortion."
"Yes, that gives me probable cause."
Charlotte looked at me, a mixture of shock and genuine respect in her eyes.
"It's a risky play," she said softly.
"If he doesn't take the bait, we have nothing left."
"He will take the bait," I said confidently.
"His ego won't let him pass up the chance to gloat."
Vance pushed a secure federal phone across the table.
"Make the call, Ms. Mercer."
"We are recording."
Charlotte took a deep breath, picked up the phone, and dialed Vale's private number.
The speakerphone echoed loudly in the small room.
It rang three times before Vale answered.
"Charlotte," his voice was smooth and dripping with arrogant victory.
"Have you finally decided to surrender?"
"You win, Richard," Charlotte said, her voice perfectly mimicking the sound of absolute defeat.
"I will step down as CEO, and I will hand over my voting shares to you."
"But I need your guarantee that the allegations against my fiancé will be dropped, and the evidence you possess regarding the Hawthorne blueprints will be destroyed."
The room held its breath, waiting for his response.
"A generous offer, Charlotte," Vale chuckled, the sound of ice clinking against glass audible in the background.
"But unfortunately, I don't negotiate with criminals."
"I am not going to destroy the evidence."
"I am going to hand it over to the authorities tomorrow morning."
My stomach plummeted.
He wasn't taking the bait.
"Richard, please," Charlotte pleaded, adding a desperate edge to her voice.
"You have what you want; you have the firm."
"I don't just want the firm, Charlotte," Vale said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, lethal whisper.
May you like
"I want you in a federal prison cell."
"And I won't have to lift a finger to put you there, because the real thief is already sitting right next to you."
