Chương 10 - The False Victory

I stared down the barrel of Vale's suppressed pistol, the cold reality of his betrayal freezing me in place.
He was going to kill me, plant the confession on my body, and walk away with the firm.
"You won't get away with this," I choked out, my voice betraying my absolute terror.
"The FBI knows I'm here."
Vale laughed, a sharp, dismissive sound that echoed through the dark patent library.
"The FBI thinks you're a rogue architect trying to extort me," he mocked.
"When they find your body, they'll assume a deal went wrong with your black-market contacts."
He steadied his aim, his eyes devoid of any human empathy.
"Goodbye."
Before he could pull the trigger, the massive metal filing cabinets behind him suddenly crashed forward with a deafening roar.
Vale stumbled, distracted for a fraction of a second, his shot going wide and shattering a glass display case to my left.
Charlotte stepped out from the shadows, wielding a heavy iron bookend like a weapon.
She didn't hesitate.
She swung the iron bookend with terrifying force, striking Vale's wrist with a sickening crunch.
Vale screamed in agony, dropping the pistol to the floor.
Suddenly, the library was flooded with blinding tactical lights.
"FBI! Drop your weapons and get on the ground!" a dozen voices roared simultaneously.
Director Vance and his tactical team swarmed into the room, tackling the screaming Vale to the floor and securing his hands with heavy zip ties.
I collapsed against the reading table, gasping for air, my knees trembling violently.
Charlotte dropped the iron bookend and rushed over to me.
"Are you okay?" she asked, her voice tight with genuine concern, the cold mask she had worn in the interrogation room completely gone.
"You... you were here the whole time?" I stammered, trying to slow my racing heart.
She nodded, a fierce, triumphant smile breaking across her face.
"Vance and I planned the fake betrayal to make sure Vale lowered his guard."
"We needed him to think you were alone and desperate."
She reached out and took my hand, her grip warm and reassuring.
"You played your part perfectly."
Vance walked over to the table, picking up the silver hard drive and the metal briefcase full of cash.
"We have him on attempted murder, extortion, and possession of stolen corporate property," Vance announced, looking down at the struggling, furious Vale.
"He's going away for a very long time."
The tactical team hauled Vale to his feet and dragged him out of the library, his arrogant sneer finally replaced by absolute panic.
The nightmare was over.
We had the evidence, the firm was safe, and the man who tried to destroy us was in federal custody.
The Hawthorne committee would be forced to reinstate our bid once the FBI cleared our names.
Charlotte squeezed my hand, looking at me with a mixture of relief and something deeper, something that felt entirely real.
"We did it," she whispered, her eyes shining in the harsh tactical lights.
"We saved the firm."
I smiled, finally allowing myself to believe that the ordeal was truly finished.
"Does this mean we can finally call off the fake engagement?" I joked weakly, looking down at the heavy gold ring still resting on my finger.
Charlotte's smile faltered slightly, a shadow passing over her features.
"Actually," she said slowly, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper.
"There is one minor complication we still need to discuss."
I frowned, the sense of victory suddenly chilling.
"What complication?"
Charlotte looked past me, staring into the dark maze of the remaining filing cabinets.
"The FBI just secured the master drive Vale brought tonight," she explained, her grip on my hand tightening painfully.
"But when Julian ran the decryption sequence on it five minutes ago from the mobile command center..."
She swallowed hard, her eyes wide with a terrifying realization.
"The drive was completely empty."
She turned back to look at me, the fear returning to her eyes with devastating force.

"Richard Vale didn't have the real blueprints."
"Someone else did."
