Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

"You are no longer my daughter."

My father's words hung in the sterile air of the hospital waiting room.

Megan let out a choked, wet gasp.

She looked around frantically, desperate for someone to defend her.

She found no one.

Chris backed away from his wife, his eyes wide with a mixture of disgust and pure horror.

"Chris, please, you know how dramatic Ethan can be," she pleaded.

Her husband shook his head, looking completely broken.

"I am taking our son to my mother's house tonight."

"Don't you dare come home, Megan."

Sarah gripped my arm so tightly her nails dug into my skin, but I didn't care.

I just stared at the woman I used to call my sister.

She had locked my little boy in the dark, cold depths of a basement just for a picture-perfect party.

Before Megan could spit out another pathetic excuse, the heavy double doors of the emergency wing swung open with a violent crash.

Dr. Evans ran out, his green scrubs stained with something dark.

"Where are Ethan's parents?" he shouted, scanning the room.

I lunged forward, Sarah right beside me.

"What is it?" I asked, my voice cracking.

"Is he okay?"

Dr. Evans looked at us with grim intensity.

"We stabilized his temperature, but his appendix has completely ruptured."

"That is not the worst of it, though."

He held up a clipboard, his hand trembling slightly.

"We found massive traces of a powerful adult sedative in his bloodstream."

"Someone deliberately drugged your eight-year-old son."

The words echoed in my ears like a gunshot.

Sarah let out a piercing scream and collapsed against my chest.

I caught her, my own knees threatening to buckle under the weight of the doctor's words.

I turned my head slowly, my eyes locking onto Megan.

She was frozen by the vending machines, the blue frosting still flaking off her fingers.

Her face had drained of all color, leaving her looking like a terrified ghost.

"Megan," I whispered, the rage bubbling up in my throat like acid.

"What did you give him?"

She shook her head violently, taking a step backward toward the exit.

"Nothing!" she shrieked.

"I swear I just gave him a little juice to calm his stomach!"

Dr. Evans frowned, stepping between us to maintain order.

"Whatever was in that juice is causing his heart rate to plummet."

"If we don't find out exactly what pill was used, the anesthesia for his emergency surgery could kill him."

Before I could grab my sister and shake the truth out of her, heavy footsteps echoed down the hall.

Two uniformed police officers walked into the waiting room.

They looked directly at Megan.

"Megan Davis?" the taller officer asked, resting his hand on his utility belt.

"We received a call from the charge nurse about a suspected child poisoning."
