Chapter 7 - The Secret Visitor

I dropped the phone in pure shock.

The fragile device shattered into pieces on the concrete garage floor.

Damian didn't even stop to ask questions.

He simply grabbed my hand and pulled me back toward the hospital elevators.

We burst into the pediatric recovery wing exactly three minutes later.

Evan was thrashing wildly on the small hospital bed.

Various heart monitors were beeping rapidly out of control.

Four nurses were actively struggling to keep his delicate IV lines attached.

"Evan, baby, I am right here!" I cried, rushing to his side.

He looked at me with wild, feverish eyes.

"Where is she?" he sobbed loudly.

"Where is the lady with the silver hair?"

I felt the warm blood drain from my face completely.

Vivian Cross had very distinctive, perfectly coiffed silver hair.

"Baby, what lady are you talking about?" I asked, my voice trembling badly.

"The nice lady who comes to the park every Tuesday," Evan sniffled.

"She gives us expensive chocolates and told us our daddy was a real king."

I looked up at Damian in absolute, paralyzing horror.

I took the boys to that specific park every Tuesday while I worked on my laptop.

Vivian had been secretly watching us.

She had been regularly interacting with my children right under my nose.

Damian leaned over the hospital bed, his stoic expression finally breaking.

"Hey, buddy," Damian said softly.

Evan instantly stopped crying and stared up at his father.

"You are the king," Evan whispered in utter awe.

Damian choked back a heavy sob and gently brushed the hair from Evan's sweaty forehead.

"Yes, I am," Damian promised him fiercely.

"And I am going to keep you safe forever."

Suddenly, the small television in the corner of the hospital room flickered to life.
