Chapter 3 - The Waiting Room

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone in sheer panic.
Damian snatched the device directly from my hand before I could react.
His eyes rapidly scanned the frantic text message from my babysitter.
Without a single word, he pulled out his own phone and dialed his head of security.
"Get a full tactical team to Claire's apartment right now," he barked into the receiver.
He rattled off my exact home address from memory.
I felt a terrifying chill run down my spine.
He had known where I lived this entire time.
"I thought you believed I was in Europe," I said defensively.
Damian shoved his phone back into his tailored pocket.
"I run a global shipping empire, Claire."
"Did you really think I wouldn't keep tabs on the woman who broke my heart?"
His words struck me like a heavy physical blow.
Before I could even process his confession, the double doors of the surgical wing burst open.
The lead surgeon rushed out with fresh blood on his blue scrubs.
My knees nearly buckled beneath me.
Damian firmly caught my arm to keep me from falling over.
"What happened?" Damian demanded.
The surgeon pulled off his surgical mask with a shaking hand.
"Evan's heart defect is much more complicated than the initial scans showed."
"We need a massive transfusion of O-negative blood, but the hospital's bank was depleted after a pile-up on the interstate this morning."
I felt the entire room start spinning around me.
"I am A-positive," I choked out through my tears.
Damian immediately started unbuttoning his expensive shirt sleeves.
"I am O-negative," he told the doctor without hesitation.
The surgeon looked relieved but quickly frowned at the chart.
"Are you currently taking any heavy immunosuppressants?" the doctor asked.
Damian froze completely.

I looked up at my ex-husband in pure confusion.
"Damian, why would you be taking immunosuppressants?" I asked.
