Chapter 8 - The Empire Falls

Damian stared at the bright television screen in sheer disbelief.
The news ticker scrolled aggressively along the bottom of the screen.
"CEO Damian Cross ousted in emergency board meeting," the text read.
"Vivian Cross formally assumes full control of all corporate assets."
She had successfully executed a hostile takeover of his own company while he was bleeding into a bag to save his son.
Damian hastily pulled out his phone, but the screen was completely black.
"She froze all my accounts," he realized aloud.
"She cut off my power entirely so I cannot fight her legal team."
I pulled Evan tightly to my chest, extremely careful not to disturb his fresh surgical bandages.
We were completely and utterly trapped.
Vivian had physically taken my other two children, stolen Damian's empire, and secured the law heavily on her side.
"We have nothing left," I whispered in total despair.
Damian stood up extremely slowly from the edge of the bed.
A terrifying, icy calm settled over his handsome features.
It was the definitive look of a man who suddenly had nothing left to lose.
"She thinks my money is the source of my power," Damian said coldly.
"She completely forgot how I built this empire in the very first place."
He turned to his loyal security guard, Marcus, who was standing quietly by the door.
"Marcus, do you still have backdoor access to the Cayman Island servers?" Damian asked.
Marcus cracked a very rare, highly dangerous smile.
"Yes, boss."
"Good," Damian commanded sharply.
"Release the Blackwood files directly to the FBI."
Marcus immediately began typing furiously on an encrypted black tablet.
"What exactly are the Blackwood files?" I asked nervously.
"Hard evidence of my mother's illegal offshore arms trading," Damian stated without any emotion.
"If she wants to play dirty, I will gladly send her to federal prison."

We waited in agonizing, suffocating silence for ten long minutes.
Then, the door to the recovery room slowly clicked open.
