Chapter 6 - The Custody War

I stared at the thick envelope as if it were a venomous snake.
Damian violently slapped the envelope right out of the lawyer's hand.
The crisp papers spilled across the damp concrete floor of the garage.
"Emergency Custody Order," the bold black letters read at the top of the page.
I dropped to my knees and desperately gathered the scattered legal documents.
My eyes frantically scanned the dense legal jargon.
Vivian was officially accusing me of severe medical negligence.
She claimed I willfully endangered Evan's life by withholding available financial resources.
"You had a black card with absolutely unlimited funds," the lawyer sneered down at me.
"Yet you let your son's heart condition deteriorate because of your own petty pride."
Tears of absolute rage heavily blurred my vision.
"I lived in poverty because Vivian threatened to ruin me if I touched a single dime of Cross money!" I screamed.
"Do you have any actual proof of that threat?" the lawyer asked calmly.
I froze, realizing I had nothing but my word against a powerful billionaire.
Damian grabbed the lawyer by his expensive silk tie and slammed him against the SUV.
"Tell my mother she has exactly one hour to return my sons," Damian snarled.
"Or what?" the lawyer choked out, looking entirely unfazed by the threat.
"The judge has already signed the temporary order, Damian."
"Legally speaking, the boys belong to Vivian now."
Damian slowly released the man, his handsome face completely drained of color.
My phone rang loudly in my pocket, shattering the tense silence.
It was the lead pediatric surgeon.
"Mrs. Bennett, you need to come back upstairs immediately," the doctor said urgently.
My stomach plummeted straight to the concrete floor.
"Is it Evan?" I pleaded.
"The surgery was successful, but he just woke up in the recovery ward," the doctor explained.

"He is crying hysterically and throwing medical equipment at the nurses."
"He keeps screaming that he wants to see the nice lady who brings him toys."
