Chapter 1 - The Pounding on the Glass

The woman on the phone repeated the massive debt amount very slowly.

Nineteen thousand, four hundred dollars.

My mind raced as I stared blindly through the narrow glass of my front storm door.

I demanded to know exactly how a home equity line of credit had been drawn against my house just yesterday.

The bank representative explained that my son-in-law had presented a perfectly valid financial power of attorney to authorize the withdrawal.

Wade had rushed to the bank and used the old document just hours before Otis could officially process the legal revocation.

Before I could process this massive betrayal, Wade slammed his heavy fist against the glass again.

He screamed my name, his voice cracking with a desperate, unfamiliar panic that sent chills down my spine.

I refused to open the door, keeping the deadbolt firmly locked while I held the phone to my ear.

He begged me to let him inside, swearing that he was not trying to steal from me.

I told the bank representative to freeze my accounts immediately and hung up the phone.

I warned Wade that I was calling the police if he did not step off my porch right now.

He pressed his sweaty face against the glass, his eyes wide and completely bloodshot.

He yelled that the money was never meant for a luxury vacation in Hilton Head.

Wade claimed he had borrowed money from some very dangerous people to cover Caroline's secret gambling debts.

He slammed his fist into the door one final time, completely shattering the decorative glass pane.

Shards of glass rained down onto my welcome mat as he reached his bleeding arm through the hole to unlock the deadbolt.

I backed away into the hallway, terrified of the violent stranger my daughter had married.

He stumbled into my house, falling to his knees right in front of the hall table.

Wade looked up at me with tears streaming down his face and delivered a horrifying message.

He said the loan sharks had taken Caroline and the children, and they would all be killed if I didn't wire the money by noon.
