Chapter 2 - Blood and Ink

I could not believe my own eyes as I watched Julian hand a thick envelope to our mother.
"The bank accepted the refinancing paperwork this morning," Julian said with a greedy smirk.
"Mateo's signature was perfectly copied, and the funds will be transferred to your offshore account by midnight."
My blood ran cold.
They were not just trying to drive Lucía away; they were stealing everything I had ever worked for.
"And what about the pregnant problem?" Julian asked, glancing toward the hallway.
Mercedes let out a cold, dismissive laugh.
"She is weak, and the stress is already breaking her down," my mother replied.
I needed to get back in there and throw them both out immediately.
I reached for the door handle of my car, ready to sprint back to my house.
Suddenly, the camera feed glitched, and the audio distorted.
I saw Lucía stumble out of the bedroom, clutching her stomach in pure agony.
The paramedics were not with her.
"Where are the medics?" Lucía cried out, leaning heavily against the wall.
Julian chuckled darkly and held up a thick wad of cash.
"I paid them off at the back door to leave early," he admitted.
Lucía gasped in horror and collapsed to her knees.
I screamed her name inside my car, even though she could not hear me.
I quickly pressed the button on my phone to dial 911 for a real ambulance.
The screen immediately froze, displaying a red warning symbol.
"Network locked by administrator," the error message read.
I tried to restart the phone, but the screen went completely black.

Julian had not just forged my signature; he had hacked my entire digital network.
I was completely cut off, and my pregnant wife was trapped alone with two monsters.
